| Biography |
Marco Sullivan grew up in Lake Tahoe – “a mecca for skiers,” as he describes it. He was on the hill as far back as he can remember, the catch being that kids on the ski team were released from school at noon everyday. “It was a no-brainer,” he said. But Sullivan had the talent to back it up. In 2001 he won the NorAm overall, downhill and super G titles, finished ninth in downhill at the 2002 Olympics and won the U.S. Championships super G title that same year on his home hill.
Update
Sullivan wants to get caught up with a couple of missing seasons. He tore ligaments in his right knee in a training crash at Beaver Creek early in the 2004 season and never got started last season after crashing during preseason training in Tignes, France. The 2002 Olympian was on skis in the spring, free skiing with Coach John McBride as he starting working his way back on snow for the Olympic season.
Start-Up
He was 3 when he started skiing on a gravel hill in his Lake Tahoe backyard; by 7, he was racing. And then it was into Squaw Valley’s Mitey Mites program. When Sullivan claimed the DH bronze medal at the ’99 nationals (and won the British Land Championships DH and GS), coaches felt he was ready for the varsity. A four-event skier early on, he was bronze medalist in slalom at ’00 Junior Worlds.
First World Cup
Dec. 7, 2001, in Val d’Isere, France (DNF in super G) (Vivid memory: “Damn, this is icy.”)
Olympics/Worlds Experience
2003 Worlds – 17th in SG, 24th in downhill. 2002 Olympics – 9th in DH, DNF in SG.
Injuries
Tore ligaments and dislocated his left knee in crash during training run at Beaver Creek, CO, in December, 2004. Despite seriousness of injuries, was back on snow seven months later. 2000 – Tore left ACL in GS on final day of Junior Worlds.
