| Biography |
Steve Nyman, Utah born and bred, was skiing at 2 and racing at 8 for Sundance, which is located close to his home and where his father is the ski school chief. He was a discretionary pick for the 2002 Junior Worlds squad, where he collected two medals including gold in slalom. He's also a two-time U.S. downhill champion.
Update
Spinach-loving Nyman was smiling after winning his second U.S. downhill title at the Oroweat U.S. championships, but he really feels finishing ninth on the gnarly DH course in a Europa Cup at Bad Kleinkircheim, Austria, in January was more significant. "It was my first demanding DH and probably the most demanding one I've ever raced," he said, "and I felt like I nailed it." He clinched a spot on the World Championships Team, but on the eve of Worlds, he reinjured his lower leg and opted not to race so he could rest the broken left leg, injured in January 2004 while Europa Cup racing. "My goals for 2006 include the Olympics, of course," he said, "but I would really like to make a presence on the World Cup. I would like people to notice me and have me in the back of their heads."
Start-Up
Nyman was skiing at 2, racing at 8 for Sundance, not far from his home and where Dad’s the ski school chief. He shifted to Coach Rob Clayton’s stellar Park City program for Winter ’99, was a discretionary pick for the 2002 Junior Worlds squad, and collected two medals. His slalom title earned a spot at World Cup Finals where he was a surprise 15th in the slalom. In ’03, Nyman was second in a FIS-B slalom in Innerkrems, Austria, and then – another surprise! – took the downhill title on the sun-splashed first day of the U.S. Championships at Whiteface Mountain outside Lake Placid.
First World Cup
March 9, 2002, at World Cup Finals in Flachau, Austria (15th in SL
Injuries
2004 – Broke his left leg during an Europa Cup downhill on Jan. 22 in Altenmarkt, Austria. 2002 – Broke his left leg in a post-season skateboarding accident, missed much of the ’03 preseason training period
