Biography
Lake Tahoe's Stacey Cook enjoyed skiing as a kid but she really got jazzed about it when she joined Northstar's "real" racing program - and won her first race. She added downhill in 2003, winning a NorAm DH, and won the NorAm overall and DH titles in '04. She's been knocking at the door of World Cup success.

Update
Fourteen-hundredths of a second. That's all that stood between Cook and her first World Cup points last season (.06 in DH1 and.08 in DH2 in Lake Louise); in '04, just .07 kept her out of the points in Haus, Austria. "Stacey's learning. She knows she's close - and she's ready for a big breakthrough," said Coach Alex Hoedlmoser. After the near-misses in World Cup downhills at Lake Louise, Cook stuck around and won both of the ensuing NorAm super Gs. She suffered a concussion and injured her right elbow in a January crash, sidelining her for parts of the second half of the season "so I used it more as an experience-gaining year," she reasoned.

Start-Up Cook started skiing at 4 with her father at various Lake Tahoe ski centers and raced in the low-key Buddy Werner League events run by Truckee’s rec department. “When I was about 10, I got a scholarship to the Northstar [racing] program and I won the first race. That’s when I got serious,” she said. She added downhill in Winter ’02. “The NorAm win was great. I like speed; I like the training runs...like getting to ski on the course more than once.”

First World Cup
Jan. 30, 2004, downhill in Haus, AUT (41st)
