LP-1: SuperTour Top-3 for Jones

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (Oct. 7) - Olympian Clint Jones (Steamboat Springs, CO) produced his third consecutive podium Friday while Continental Cup jumping leader Marcin Bachleda of Poland tied the hill record of 101.5 meters on his final jump to win a SuperTour jumping event that opened the annual Flaming Leaves Festival with. In the women's contest, Canadian Atsuko Tanaka won her second consecutive meet with four U.S. women in the top 10.

Second in the first round of jumping on the HS100 hill at the MacKenzie-Intervale Jumping Complex with a 98-meter jump, Bachleda jumped 101.5 meters to finish with 263.5 points. Second place went to German Maximilian Mechler (258.0), the first-round leader, while Jones completed the podium with jumps of 97 and 92.5 (248.0 points).

It was the fifth top-3 finish against major international competition for Jones, who was second in two Continental Cup meets in Lillehammer, Norway, in August, and finished second and third last weekend in two more Continental Cup events at Utah Olympic Park in Park City, Utah.

Competing under cloudy skies, with a stormy front moving into the Adirondacks, Tanaka took the first round lead with a jump of 93 meters and finished with a jump of 92 meters for 237.5. Lindsey Van (Park City, UT), who won a Continental Cup a week earlier at Utah Olympic Park – the day before Tanaka’s victory, was fourth with Jessica Jerome (also Park City) sixth, Alissa Johnson (also Park City) eighth and Abby Hughes (also Park City) ninth.

The Flaming Leaves weekend, which has drawn more than 50 men and more than two dozen women from 11 nations, swings to Continental Cup action Saturday and Sunday with men and women competing again on the HS100 hill, which has a plastic matting outrun; by spraying the outrun with water, the matting closely simulates snow and enables jumpers to train during the warm weather months.
